Synopsis
This is a collection of stories about the life of a bushveld conservationist as it is lived at the ground level by that elite band of men and woman who guard the Kruger National Park - at the cost of much sweat and, not infrequently, quite a bit of blood. Bruce Bryden's tales of 27 years in the service of our most famous park make a gripping and entertaining read, abounding with encounters with elephant, lion, buffalo, leopard and rhino, whether darting for research, managing culling operations by helicopter or stalking on foot. In the best tradition of bushveld stories, there is a great deal of shooting, and a fair amount of running away; there are meetings with extraordinary characters among the rangers; memorable gatherings; hilarious mishaps and narrow escapes; and throughout, a great love and respect for both the wilderness and the creatures that inhabit it.

I just finished reading Bruce Brydon’s book and can tell you that his experiences in Kruger N.P. are among the most exciting of the many books I have read about Africa. Having worked for the U.S. Forest Service I can appreciate the hardships that he and his staff and the men about him took in stride, as well as the privations of their wives, even though there are not many dangerous animals here in North America.Aside from his numerous accounts of encounters, the greatest factor that made Mr. Brydon’s book such a pleasure to read is his tremendous skill in using the English Language. I have read many other accounts written about Africa, and their stories made for very exciting reading. Yet because they were not well versed in the international humor that constitutes a true genius of the English language, their exciting adventures offered few occasions foro laugh.Bruce Bryden’s understanding of the language is so profound that (despite his Boer ancestry) I found myself grinning on scores of occasions about various passages. I have marked these multiple paragraphs of clever, prescient phrases, remarks, and evaluations that --with a sleight of hand—I hope to one day use in my own book about African adventures.
This book must be read by African safari lovers. Probably best after you have visited a game park. Unfortunately, the author has passed away now but his recounts are still relevant, interesting and amusing. He and his family lived in Kruger for a number if years as he was a game ranger in this park. It is extremely eloquent and personal. It makes you even more aware of the precarious nature of the existence of the animals and the impact humans have had and are still having on the animals' environment. in particular, elephants. have read it twice now and will be reading it again. I have loved it to people resulting in me having to buy 2 more copies plus an e book copy. Doesn't that say something? A book that people don't want to give back?
I am preparing to leave South Africa for a number of reasons. But Kruger and my experiences there will be the most special of my memories of this beautiful country. I have bought the Kindle edition of a much read hard copy because I want to have this book available to me at all times because it embodies all that is special about my home. The author (although I want to call him Bruce because I feel like I know him) has made me laugh, cry and has inspired me. Can any author ask for more? This was, is and will continue to be a very special and evocative read.
I appreciated the speed and quality of the book. I purchased this item for research.
Bruce was a good friend. I had the opportunity to share some quality time with him during numerous visits to Kruger Park from 1980 until a few years before his death. What he discusses and covers in his book was just the way it was. I have reread his books numerous times, and it helps me to remember and understand what was happening during those years. It is a must for anyone who loves Africa and wants to know how things really were.
